Shoe Construction - Explained | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City

Dress shoes are an essential part of any stylish wardrobe, and they come in various constructions that offer different levels of comfort, durability, and style. Understanding the different dress shoe constructions is crucial in choosing the right pair for the occasion and the environment you’ll be wearing them in. In this blog post, we’ll explore the various dress shoe constructions and their differences.

  1. Cemented Construction

Cemented construction, also known as direct attach, is the most common method of shoe construction. It involves attaching the upper part of the shoe to the sole using a strong adhesive. The process is cost-effective and allows for a more lightweight and flexible shoe. However, it’s not as durable as other construction methods, and the shoe can’t be resoled once the sole wears out.

  1. Goodyear Welt Construction

The Goodyear welt construction is the most traditional and durable construction method for dress shoes. It involves stitching the upper part of the shoe to the sole through a welt, a strip of leather that runs around the edge of the shoe. The welt is then sewn to the sole, making it easy to resole the shoe. This method provides excellent durability, stability, and support, and it’s ideal for shoes that are worn frequently. Goodyear welted shoes are usually more expensive than cemented shoes due to the added labor and materials required for the process.

  1. Blake Stitch Construction

Blake stitch construction involves sewing the upper part of the shoe directly to the sole. It provides a sleek and elegant look that’s suitable for dress shoes. This construction method is flexible and lightweight, making it comfortable to wear. However, it’s less durable than Goodyear welt construction, and the shoe can’t be resoled once the sole wears out. Blake stitch construction is also less expensive than Goodyear welt construction.

  1. Storm Welt Construction

Storm welt construction is similar to Goodyear welt construction, but it provides better water resistance. It involves sewing an additional strip of leather between the welt and the upper part of the shoe, which covers the seam and prevents water from seeping through. This construction method is suitable for dress shoes that are worn in wet or snowy conditions.

  1. Moccasin Construction

Moccasin construction involves wrapping the upper part of the shoe around the foot and sewing it to the sole using a whipstitch. This construction method provides excellent flexibility and comfort, making it ideal for casual shoes. However, it’s not as durable as other construction methods, and the shoe can’t be resoled once the sole wears out.

In conclusion, dress shoes come in various constructions that offer different levels of comfort, durability, and style. Cemented construction is the most common and cost-effective method, while Goodyear welt construction is the most traditional and durable method. Blake stitch construction is lightweight and flexible, while storm welt construction provides better water resistance. Moccasin construction provides excellent flexibility and comfort but is less durable. When choosing a dress shoe, consider the occasion, the environment, and your personal style and preferences to determine which construction method is the best fit for you.

Guide To The Perfect Tee

The T-shirt isn’t ideally what you imagine when you hear the term “Men’s Fashion”. Some may assume that a t-shirt is far inferior than any other garment. It may surprise you however to know that almost every clothing company carries some sort of a t-shirt. Whether that shirt is $5.99 or $599 is of less importance than the fact that they exist-everywhere. It’s an article of clothing that is simple yet elaborate. It’s the perfect neutral piece that can complete any outfit.

T-shirts were an original undergarment worn only by men. They had long bodies so that they wouldn’t come untucked from your trousers. In the early 20th century the t-shirt evolved for the U.S. and British Navies to wear on deck while at sea. The t-shirt really boomed after World War II. Soldiers returning home from war were accustomed to wearing their t-shirts and marketers targeted the new look. The t-shirt transformed from a simple article of clothing to personal expression of all kinds. Expressed largely in the music industry with bands such as AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to name a few.

Due to so many companies offering “high-quality” t-shirts, it’s normal to be overwhelmed and discouraged when purchasing another shirt that fails to deliver. It’s difficult to find a well-made t-shirt with the qualities that you have been looking for. We get it! That is why here at UWM we have taken it personally to find the perfect t-shirt. There are a few things to be aware of before purchasing a t-shirt to feel confident that you’re buying quality.

image.png

The first is obviously fit. This has some flexibility because everyone has different preferences. Some guys like their shirts very fitted and others prefer some breathing room. Despite the body style, it’s very important that the shoulders fit well. The seam of the shoulder is supposed to lay on your natural shoulder. If you’re looking for a slightly bigger more relaxed fit, then the seam should slightly overhang the natural shoulder.

Sleeve length has differed over the years. Currently t-shirts offer a variety of looks. Some sleeves reach as far as the elbow. While others barely cover the shoulder. A modest in-between would have the end of the sleeve rest half-way down the bicep. Having the sleeve slightly above the mid-bicep generally makes the wearer have a more masculine appearance.

image.png

The last two things that a wearer should consider are both of personal preferences. One being the drape of the body of the shirt. The drape can either be a tapered look or a more contemporary look. Most men prefer something in-between. The t-shirts that we carry here at UWM Men’s Shop are extremely comfortable and offer a beautiful shape. They also have a nice stretch to them which allows the shirt to always bounce back to its original shape. The other personal preference to consider is color. This is where an individual can really show off who they are. Colors not only add character, but they also add various possibilities of outfits that can be made around the t-shirt.

We carry a variety of t-shirts here at UWM. Our Tom Nox shirt is a cotton-polyester blend priced at $49. This is a great everyday t-shirt that you can wear anywhere. Our Ettura tees are a cotton-elastane blend that come with a slightly slimmer collar (neckline). These t-shirts are very soft and flexible. The Ettura tee is a great option for a night out or to put under a sport coat. Finally, we have our Italian made Givocci t-shirt. These are available in a 100% silk and 100% linen. The silk priced at $495 and the linen at $395. The possibilities are endless on how to wear these two Italian tees. You’ve got to make it in to see these t-shirts for yourself!

Understanding Goodyear Welt vs. Blake Welt Shoes | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

When searching for shoes you have likely found that there is quite a drastic range in pricing. You have probably asked the question, what’s the difference between a pair of shoes that cost $100 and shoes that are $1,000? Features like quality of leather, brand name and where they are made are all factors. The biggest reason is the type of construction. When referring to construction, how the sole is attached to the upper of the shoe. To help explain, here is a breakdown of a shoe:

The Upper: The leather or canvas that is seen above the sole when a shoe is worn. Pretty much it is everything that covers the foot when you are wearing the shoe.

The Insole: The material on the inside of the shoe that your foot touches when wearing the shoe.

The Outsole: The material on the bottom and exterior of the sole, it’s what touches the ground when you are walking.

The Welt: On better-constructed shoes, the welt is a strip of leather which runs along the perimeter of the outsole. Its primary function is for attaching the upper to the outsole.

The Last:  The last is what gives a shoe its shape. Lasts are used for both design and construction.

Higher quality dress shoes and boots are commonly constructed in one of two ways. These two methods are known as Goodyear welt and Blake stitching.

Goodyearwelt.jpg

Goodyear Welt: Shoemakers take a strip of leather and sew that leather to the upper of the shoe. The sole is then sewed to the same strip of leather. The two-level stitching makes it incredibly easy to resole a goodyear welted shoe. Because the welt acts as a buffer between the insole and the outsole, removing the old sole and attaching a new one can be done by machine or by hand and without a specific machine. A goodyear welted shoe tends to be more water resistant as a result of the stitches being separated by a leather barrier. Shoes that are goodyear welted generally are more durable, tend to last longer and are comfortable.

Blakestitch.jpg

Blake Stitch:  On a Blake stitched shoe, the upper is sewn directly to the sole from the inside of the shoe. Although not as water resistant, a Blake stitch offers more flexibility to the shoe itself.  Because it is a simpler construction than a goodyear welt, it tends to be less expensive. A Blake stitched constructed shoe allows it to be resoled once the outsole is worn out or damaged. Blake welting is also ideal when looking for a close-cut sole. Because there are no exterior stitches, the body of the outsole can be cut extremely close to the upper.

These two methods of shoe construction are just a few of many. The only way to know what you prefer is by trying them out. Lucky for you, UWM Men’s Shop and Tom Nox Men’s Shop has examples of both for you to try for yourself. Stop by today!

Guide To Linen | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

andrew-buchanan-JjArvXwhJCk-unsplash.jpg

Linen is from the flax plant; the oldest cultivated plant known to man. The flax plant’s Latin name is Linum Usitatissimum, which is where the name linen comes from. Linen is a strong and sturdy fabric, because of this it has been used in many industries. Linen has been used for books, table cloths, bed linens, canvases, upholstery, and much more. Today, more and more people are becoming interested in linen, not just because of its strength and longevity but also because of its eco-friendliness.

Why Linen

1. Linen is stronger, more durable and also more lustrous than, for example, cotton. It is also quite crisp and absorbent.

2. Linen typically wears rather cool, because the weave is a little looser than most cotton or wool fabrics. Because of that, linen fabric usually feels more porous, and a lot of people appreciate its heat- and moisture-wicking abilities.

3. Typically, high-quality flax fibers are between 18 and 30 inches long. While it makes them durable, it also means they’re not very likely to relax, which means linen is a very wrinkly fabric. Unlike the wrinkles in cotton, the really pronounced characteristic wrinkles of linen are a sign of a sophisticated casual style.

4. Because linen doesn’t stretch much naturally, it pays to have garments to cut a little wider. But when you do that, over time the fabric becomes softer and you’ll cherish the garment even more.

Types of Linen

Irish Linen

Generally, the most popular linen used for clothing is said to be Irish linen, and it’s typically about 10 to 13 ounces heavy. Ireland does however produce linen of all kinds of weights and weaves.

European Linen

Another common linen is European linen, which is usually about 8 to 9 ounces heavy, which means it shows more wrinkles than heavier linen. Generally people that like this linen because it wears a bit cooler.

Cambric Linen

An even lighter linen option is Cambric linen, which is usually about 6 ounces heavy. Because of this it’s popular with shirting fabrics as well as pocket square fabrics.

Styling Linen

Suits & Sports Coats

Because it is typically a warm-weather fabric, most linen suits will have a single-breasted silhouette–simply because you have just one layer of fabric rather than a double layer of fabric over your chest and belly. Because linen is prone to wrinkling, it typically is worn in more casual settings

Pants

Because linen fiber is not flexible it doesn’t stretch. You will want linen pants to be cut slightly on the looser side, they’re just more comfortable that way. The extra room works great for a casual summer look.

Shirts

Some people also like linen for shirts including dress shirts or things like Henley shirts or popover shirts. Overall, it’s a very casual shirt so make sure you have a very soft collar and soft cuffs and skip the stiff interlining. If you are unsure about the wrinkling with linen, a linen shirt probably isn’t for you.

eleventh-wave-eLJQiAB5P4w-unsplash.jpg

Caring For Linen

Linen fabrics don’t have lint and they’re not prone to pilling. To clean, a warm hand wash or delicate machine wash is best.

Ironing Linen

Linen wrinkles a lot, and therefore it’s best ironed. Fortunately, you can iron it with very high heat and you don’t need an extra cloth, like you would need with wool. It’s best ironed with a steam iron or ideally when it’s still slightly moist so you can remove all the wrinkles from it. Keep in mind, though, that linen will always wrinkle and it’s just part of the charm of the fabric. Don’t fight it, embrace the wrinkle!

Pant Breaks Explained | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

spencer-davis-LKqlstiEw8I-unsplash.jpg

At UWM Men’s Shop when you are being fitted for a pair of pants, a common question you might be asked is How do you like your pants to break? The break of your pants simply put is how the legs of your pants meet your shoes and the shape that forms, like most styles, the pant break is a matter of preference.

With that said, choosing the wrong dress pant break may not flatter your body type, or be appropriate for the environment or occasion. Regardless, let us help in educating you so that when this question comes up you know to answer, here’s what you need to know.

What is The Pant Break?

The “break” of the pant is the fold or creasing of fabric that forms at the front of your pant leg, just above where it meets your shoe, while you’re standing. An easy way to think about it is that the pant break is the point where the suit pants break its silhouette against the shoe.

The cut of your suit pants, both the length and width of your pant legs, affect how generous or slight your pant break will be. Generally, longer pants equals more break. However, counter to that a wider pant will equal less break. There isn’t a strict set of rules when deciding what type of pant break to go with for your pants. There are however some things to keep in mind as you figure out what will work best for you.

  • What is the fit of the pants?

  • Are the legs slim or wide?

  • Where do you plan to wear the pants?

  • What is the look you are going for?

The answers to these questions will narrow down which of the four pant breaks is for you. Your options are, No Break, Quarter Break, Half Break  or Full Break.

No Break

breaks.jpg

No break offers a clean modern aesthetic from the slim and streamlined look that is definitely trending right now. Having No Break means the hem of your pants will sit just above your shoe. The no break look works best on slimmer body types or men who are above average in height. That’s because despite a cleaner silhouette, from certain angles (particularly the back and to a lesser extent, from the side), the pant legs can appear shorter and therefore further the appearance of shorter, thicker legs.

Quarter Break

pant+breaks.jpg

We understand that the slim & tapered shorter pants aren't for everyone, if not the quarter break may be for you. The quarter break is an updated classic that is flattering on a wide range of body types. The hem of the pant will sit just past where your pant legs meet your shoe with minimal contact. This option is modern, tasteful but not flashy. The quarter break is perfect for the modern businessman..

Quarter breaks can be found on pants that are slimmer, and similar to the no break look, quarter breaks are easy to wear for those that are taller or slimmer.

Half Break

The half break leans more to the conservative side of the spectrum, a traditional yet flexible option that works in most contexts. The hem of your pants with a half break should sit ½” to  ¾” past the point where your pants first meet your shoes, this will allow a slight horizontal fold to make contact with the front of your shoes.

breaks.jpg

A half break can work with both slimmer pants and those that are less tapered and more straight leg. Wearers who are shorter will benefit from a combination of a slimmer fit and the slightly longer length, which can help create an elongating visual effect.

Full Break

The most conservative option is the full break. A full break is a great look for older gentlemen or those who like a classic look. A full break is when the hem of your pants makes substantial contact with your shoes to the effect of creating a generous but still elegant looking ripple in the area above the hem. Since this look often pairs with pant legs that are less tapered, the longer hem will also cover most of the laces on your shoes and the back of the hem will sit just above the outer soles of your shoes.

Tips For a Better Night Sleep | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

jon-tyson-zzzsVQvtpDA-unsplash.jpg

As you are well aware life is different these days. Due to the corona-virus pandemic we aren’t able to work the way we once did, we can’t shop or go to the gym like we did before. And if you are like me you certainly aren’t sleeping as well as you once did. Whether it’s because of difficulty turning your brain off to fall asleep, bizarre dreams, insomnia or just difficulty staying asleep, a good night sleep is hard to come by. Now there's even more to think about due to the protests over police brutality and racial injustice across the country.

Everyone knows that good sleep is crucial to your overall health. It helps keep your brain sharp, your metabolism firing and your immune system fighting off infection. To do this, you need to be clocking seven hours of quality sleep each night. Here's some tips we have found on how to make this happen.

twinsfisch-M3bjyGLP81Y-unsplash.jpg

MAKE A SLEEP SCHEDULE

Going to bed and getting up at the same time or close to the same time each day is vital to be able to train your body to sleep better. It is important to limit the variance of your sleep schedule during the week and on weekends to no more than an hour. Having consistency will help to reinforce your body's sleep-wake cycle, however, taking naps can interfere with the cycle, so try to avoid them if you are having trouble sleeping at night.

benjamin-voros-X63FTIZFbZo-unsplash.jpg

MANAGE YOUR STRESS

This one can definitely be difficult to accomplish due to the global pandemic and nationwide protests. Unfortunately having a mind that is constantly running and worried is the enemy of sleep. It is important to resolve immediate concerns before calling it quits for the night. One way to do this is by journaling, try writing down what's on your mind and any to-dos that are top of mind. Set them aside to deal with tomorrow. Another thing that will help is putting your phone away. Social media or news apps definitely aren’t going to do you any favors the hour before going to bed. You may also consider a quick 15-minute meditation to help quiet and calm your mind before laying down for the night.

priscilla-du-preez-XT1htKRl_0A-unsplash.jpg

FOOD AND DRINK

If you're having trouble sleeping, try cutting out any caffeine after noon. Even if you think caffeine doesn’t affect you. There has been research shown that when caffeine is consumed later in the day, it can stimulate your nervous system and may stop your body from naturally relaxing at night. When it comes to food, follow the example of your grandparents try having a lighter dinner earlier in the evening. Eating too much food too late will force your body to work overtime, this will force your digestive system to be working when it should be resting.

BE ACTIVE

Making time for regular physical activity will definitely help you to sleep better. Try to avoid being active close to bedtime. Being active gets your heart racing. It also raises your blood pressure and body temperature. Workout first thing in the morning or at lunchtime to ensure that at night you are able to get the sleep you desperately need.

KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT

milada-vigerova-smEvocYYuAA-unsplash.jpg

After all of this, if in the middle of you're tossing and turning, fight the tendency to stay in bed. Get up and do something relaxing like reading or journaling, something mindless. Stay up doing this until you're sleepy, then return to bed. The American Sleep Association says that doing this promotes healthier sleep and makes the bedroom a more welcomed sight as opposed to a frustrating torture chamber.

We hope that these tips might be able to help a little, it did for me. If you need to get some daytime steps in, stop by UWM Men’s Shop to see what's new and what you can add to your spring and summer wardrobes.

We look forward to seeing you!!

What To Wear To A Job Interview | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

dylan-gillis-KdeqA3aTnBY-unsplash.jpg

Did you know that in an interview it is in the first few seconds that a first impression is made, when meeting your interviewer(s) and/or leadership of the company for the first time. Generally the rest of time in conversation is usually spent confirming or discarding the initial judgments made by your counterpart and rationalizing them. It can be incredibly difficult, at times impossible, to overcome a first bad impression. At UWM Men’s Shop we are here to help so that you don’t even have to bother worrying about making a good first impression. What you wear is a key part.

Wearing a formal business suit is not always necessary for an interview. At times it is, if you have nothing else to go on it is a safe default. Keep in mind that overdressing can cost you a job just as easily as under dressing depending on the job type. We recommend The One Step Higher rule. If day to day you’d be wearing khakis and a dress shirt but no tie, you should show up at the interview wearing slacks, a sportcoat, and a shirt with a tie, but no suit. If you’d be wearing jeans and a polo at the job, wear khakis and a tie but no jacket. Do some prep work to ensure that you are appropriately dressed to impress. Here is a few ways to accomplish this depending on your connections,

Find An Insider

There are some situations where the interview offer will include instructions such as “no need to wear a suit” or “dress professionally.” If you don’t have these instructions, try to connect with someone who works there and ask their opinion.

muhammad-faiz-zulkeflee-alw-CwGFmwQ-unsplash.jpg

Make a Visit

If you are unable to make an internal connection, stop by the office or location to see the work attire for yourself. Drop by at the start or end of the workday to get an idea of what the dress code is based on the attire of those coming and going.

Online Research

Another option is to visit the businesses website and social media pages. Generally these pages will include images of behind the scenes, work parties or other company related images that may provide you with a general idea of work attire.

If these suggestions don’t provide you with definitive answers narrow down to what industry it is  and the general formality or standards of that industry. Here’s a few examples to help:

  • Strict Business Dress: Business Suit, Shirt and tie in conservative colors

    • Law Firms

    • Financial Institutions

    • Executive Roles

    • Political Positions

    • Business Consulting

    • Managerial or Administrative

Suited.jpg

  •  Business Casual: Sportcoat. Nice Slacks, Nice Shoes, Button down Shirt, Tie (Optional)

    • Mid/Entry Level Office Jobs

    • Clerical, Civil Service Desk Jobs

    • Upscale Retail Positions

    • Political Office and Campaign Roles

    • Engineering, Laboratory, Software, Tech-Sector Jobs

Bus+casual.jpg

  • Casual: Buttondown Shirt (tucked in), Tie (Optional), Khaki Pants, Leather Shoes

    • Retail Stores

    • Casual Dining or Food Service

    • Customer Service or Customer Support

Casual.jpg

  • Hands On or Skills: Work Shirt, Work Pants, Work Boots

    • Construction

    • Skilled labor

    • Landscaping or Gardening

    • Farm or Ranch Work

    • Factory floor jobs (machinist, etc.)

To Review, here is the three key steps to having the perfect interview attire:

  1. Know Before You Go. Learn what the company’s dress and culture are like.

  2. Follow the One Step Higher Rule. Dress for the job you want, plus one level of general formality.

  3. Take Care of Your Grooming Details. Plan the appropriate outfit for the level of formality. Have it cleaned and pressed. Get your hair trimmed, your nails cleaned.

How To Look Your Best At Weddings | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

IMG_2515.jpg

As we move into the spring and summer months we look forward to the warmer weather, upcoming vacations and warm summer nights. Here in the shop we are excited about these things as well, but what we are really excited about is the wedding season. Love must be in the air in the summer, surveys say that 35% of couples get married between the months of May and August. This means that odds are you guys will be attending a wedding or two this summer. At UWM Men’s Shop we are here to help. Whether you are the groom trying to keep up with your beautiful bride, a gentleman in the wedding party or just an attendee we got you covered.

Groom

As the groom, your attire should be appropriate for your venue and match with the overall vibe of your wedding. If your wedding is in the daytime or outdoors, you can wear something more casual, fabrics such as linen, cotton or seersucker. For an evening affair in a ballroom or hotel, go with a darker, well-tailored suit or tux. Be sure to dress for your body type. Keep in mind that even the most expensive suit or tux will look and feel awful if it doesn't fit right. You want to be able to enjoy your wedding day, worrying about fit issues or being uncomfortable will put a damper on the occasion . Having your suit tailored to fit perfectly is a no brainer.

kats-weil-CLD1i8hp008-unsplash.jpg

Groomsmen

Traditionally, groomsmen wear attire that's similar to the groom. If the groom isn't planning for the guys in the wedding party to wear the exact same suit or tux, make sure that their outfits match in style and feel with the groom. Aim to pair the groomsmens style to the bridesmaids, if the bridesmaids have a vintage vibe, have the guys dressed to match.

Attendee

If you are just attending the wedding, it is a good idea to look at the invite to see if where the wedding is taking place as well as to see if there is a specific dress code requested. You don’t want to be overdressed and upstage the groom or drawing attention away from the bride. These days, A semi-formal dress code is most common and unless the invite says otherwise is a safe bet. A sport coat and slacks with a button down shirt with a tie or just open collar is a classic look for most occasions.

IMG_2516.jpg

If the wedding is more of a black tie affair, the semi-formal look will not work. In most black tie situations a tuxedo is your best bet however a dark suit will also work. A white button down dress shirt and black bow tie or necktie is best practice. If you are unsure about the dress code, wear a nice fitting suit and a button down shirt with a tie. If you arrive and find you are overdressed you can take off the suit jacket and tie and still look great.

At UWM we could not be more thrilled to be OPEN. We are loaded up with great suits, tuxedos, accessories and more to make sure you look amazing at the wedding this summer.

Tips to Working From Home | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

manny-pantoja-P2-4kxFhvCQ-unsplash.jpg

As you are all well aware, due to the corona virus, most companies have implemented work from home policies. Many of you are now working from home and dealing with some new challenges. Not knowing how long this will last is difficult. Not being able to socialize in person inside or outside of work is also tough.

At UWM we want to help where we can, here are a few tips we have found to help you be successful, both at getting your work done and at maintaining your mental well-being.

Get Dressed

It’s a simple one, but a crucial tip. You don’t need to dress up quite as much as you might normally, but don’t wear your PJ’s either. The act of changing clothes will help you wake up and start getting things done. Putting on clothes suitable for public viewing will help you to feel confident and helps draw the line between being at work and being at home.

Getting dressed also applies to other appearance tasks: Take a shower, brush your hair, do the things that you would usually do. Your appearance can go a long way toward helping you feel like you’re taking care of yourself. Remember, just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean that no one from work will see you, thanks Zoom!

Designate a Workspace

jeff-sheldon-a8K-puaPyVk-unsplash.jpg

A major challenge to working from home is keeping a separation of work and home life. If you aren’t able to disconnect from work, your productivity can suffer, your home life can take a hit as well. Recreate your daily routine as much as possible with a designated physical workspace at home. Your workspace doesn’t have to be its own room but it should feel as separate from the rest of your home as possible.

Try to make your workspace comfortable where you can sit for eight hours a day. Find an area with good natural light if you can. Losing out on the time you spend outdoors during your commute can weigh on you quickly, a space with natural light will help in limiting the weight.

Entering your designated workspace will help you turn it on at the beginning of the day and get down to work. Alternatively leaving your workspace will also help you turn it off at the end of the day and fully disengage.

Clearly Define Working Hours

hennie-stander-tzwA11Q_M74-unsplash.jpg

Be clear about when you’re working and when you’re not. You will get your best work done and be ready to transition back to the office if you keep to your normal office hours. The difference between working from home and working in the office is that you are in charge of your environment. You have to hold yourself accountable, also recognizing when enough is enough, just as a manager would. If you live with other people, separation is critical. Communicate with the people you live with and set boundaries so you can limit distractions during the workday, then disconnect and give the people your full attention. Having a separate time and space to work will allow you to be more present in your home life.

Build Transitions In and Out of Work

Your morning commute is more important than you think, not only do you get from point A to point B, it gives your brain time to prepare for work. Make sure to carve out equivalent routines to help you ease into your workday. If you listen to books or music on your commute normally, do that at home. An evening commute can help you wind down from a hectic workday and mentally prepare for their evening routine. Give yourself something that signals the end of work and serves as a buffer. Get out of the house/office space. Go for a walk or run, run necessary errands that you wouldn’t do during the work day.

Don’t Get Too Distracted by Outside Stuff

Distraction is a big challenge to people who work from home, especially if you aren’t used to it.

You probably already take a few breaks throughout the day at the office, and that’s fine to do at home, too. Try to avoid using this time for tasks around the house, keep the same focus you would on a break at the office, go for a quick walk, get a snack. Something simple so that when it’s time to get back to work it’s an easy transition.

chris-montgomery-smgTvepind4-unsplash.jpg

Make Sure to Socialize

Working from home may cut off a lot of the casual social interactions you’re used to having throughout the day that break up the monotony of work. It’s the small talk and random interactions that make your days feel unique and different. When you work from home, you don’t have that. Combat this by talking with your colleagues or leaders throughout the day through calls, text, Zoom, or however your company communicates. If you usually ask your coworkers about their weekends, keep that up. Those little interactions will go a long way. Everyone is feeling anxious and uncertain right now and suddenly being isolated at home can amplify these feelings. Don’t hesitate to reach out to coworkers to ask how they’re doing.

Hopefully these tips will help make these difficult times a little easier. If not UWM Men’s Shop is open, we are taking extra precautions to keep you safe. Our staff will be wearing face masks as well as disinfecting contact surfaces multiple times a day. So stop by the shop and take a load off. See you soon!!

How to Use Social Distancing to your Advantage | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

sharon-mccutcheon-zOIZTkq0CX8-unsplash.jpg

In these crazy and unprecedented times, we have an incredibly unique opportunity with social distancing: We have more space and more time to connect with others, pick up new hobbies and better ourselves. At UWM Men’s Shop we want to help. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Exercise

It is incredibly important to get into a routine that includes exercise. This will be one of the hardest things to do. It is always going to be easy to say I’ll do it tomorrow. Adding exercise to your routine by scheduling it in will be helpful. Last week you probably were hitting the gym consistently however the brakes got slammed pretty hard on your previous routine when all of the gyms and classes closed everywhere. It's also possible that you haven't had much of a relationship with exercise for years. Regardless it will be easy to wake up from our current situation 15 pounds heavier than before it started. Being stuck at home all day and not exercising tends to do that to the human body.

I realize it isn’t ideal not having access to weights or machines like you prefer however, there are some fairly simple exercises you can do at home to get you by until you can get back to the gym. Commit to 50 pushups and 50 crunches each day, go outside for a run, a hike or even a brisk walk. Be creative with it and find things around the house to lift. There is also of course the internet which can provide you with thousands countless examples of at home workouts.

  1. Enjoy Time with Friends and Family

With all of the free time that most of us have right now this is a great opportunity to take advantage of time with family and friends. I realize with the social distancing this may seem challenging however with the advancements of modern technology it can still be done. With cell phones not only can you make a phone call but also most have the capability to do video calls which is almost as good as being there in person. Use this free time to connect or reconnect with friends and loved ones. With all that is going on in the world today you may not have the time to connect with loved ones in the future.

dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash.jpg

  1. Upgrade Your Wardrobe by Cleaning Out Your Closet

It’s simple, when your wardrobe is packed full of all your clothes from high school, college as well as your newfound adult clothing. The reality is you're not wearing and will never wear the majority of these items, so why keep them? Do yourself a favor and do some spring cleaning. How much easier would it be to get dressed and feel confident knowing the only thing in your closet is pieces that you love to wear? Being stuck at home makes spring cleaning easier than ever. Take advantage of this great opportunity to start fresh.

  1. Journaling

aaron-burden-CKlHKtCJZKk-unsplash.jpg

You can use journaling in many different ways. You can track your habits like when you exercised, worked on a goal or even to track your daily mood. It can be a way to remember what you accomplished during your day. You can use a journal to brainstorm or reflect. It can be a place to document the answers to all of those philosophical questions you might have in your head. Or you can use it like I use a journal just to keep track of things, thoughts, feelings questions, or just notes and reminders so I don’t forget them.

It is fun to go back through and review whether weekly, monthly or yearly re-read your journal to get a view of where your life was, is and where you want to go in the future. Start small, but definitely give it a try, it's well worth it!

  1. Discover or Rediscover Reading

One thing that many people enjoy doing when they have free time is recreational reading. If you're anything like me, you may have burned out on books after school. It has taken me a while to get to the point of reading for enjoyment. There is a definite difference in reading what you want because you want to as opposed to because you have to for an assignment.

If picking up a book and reading for fun doesn’t quite cut it, try an audiobook.  Audible is what helped me a ton. When you're stuck at home an audiobook is a great way to read while doing honey do’s around the house in the yard or when you are in the car. You can listen to anything from fiction to take your mind away, to self-help or informational to help yourself. My favorites are documentaries because I enjoy learning from other people and discovering how people became who they are. Whether you pick up and read a book or listen, reading is a great way to pass the time and enjoy.

These are just a few examples to get you started. Here is a few more examples you could look into:

  1. Diet Improvements

  2. Musical Instruments

  3. Meditation

  4. New Business or Side Gigs

  5. Creative Projects

  6. Online Classes to improve or add skills

Tips For Growing and Wearing a Moustache | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

alberto-bigoni-LPIAsTzeWck-unsplash.jpg

Well folks February came and went and March is here. At UWM Men’s Shop March is definitely one of our favorite months. In March we are another month closer to escaping the frozen tundra and enjoying the amazing spring and summer seasons that Utah provides. In March we also get to celebrate Moustache March and sport the untamed ruggedness that is the moustache.

For those that are brave enough, wearing a stache  is perhaps the biggest grooming power move a man can make. However, it’s also one of the riskiest. There are a number of factors  including genetics, face shape and confidence that play into what the potential end results of your growth. Don’t let these factors deter you in your own pursuit of a hairy upper lip. We have put together a style guide with some tips to help you in growing and maintaining a moustache in your facial hair journey.

IMG_2177.PNG

Whether you’re growing one for Moustache March, Movember or simply because it's the newest trend at the moment growing a stache takes time to grow and train. If you are not a patient person a stache may not be the look for you. If you are a patient person, here’s some tips.

TRIMMING

Initially the easiest way to trim your moustache is with clippers or a beard trimmer, after 3-4 weeks get a pair of facial hair scissors to trim around the mouth. At this point you should also start using a moustache comb and some wax. Using these will help shape and train your moustache filling any gaps also keeping it from looking fluffy or unruly

CLEAN IT

Facial hair can be very coarse, which can make your skin feel dry and itchy, try using a little facial hair shampoo and conditioner to keep your moustache clean and conditioned.

Trim+Mustache+%26+Beard+Stainless+Steel+Scissors%E2%80%A6.jpg

TRIM WHEN IT’S DRY

Do not trim a wet moustache. Wet hair is heavier and will hang longer. When it dries and retracts you probably will find you’ve trimmed more than you intended to.

COMBING

A moustache comb is an incredibly helpful tool. You can use it to evenly distribute moustache wax. It's also a useful aid when trimming. Use the comb to lift your stache hair, it’ll make trimming with scissors much easier.

FACE SHAPE IS IMPORTANT

It is important to account for your face shape when choosing a moustache style. Try to strike a balance between your face shape and the style you choose. If you have a more square face go for a heavy, longer moustache and if it’s more oval shaped opt for a medium width style.

Orange%25252BDev2.jpg

THE BEARDSTACHE

Having heavier stubble and a thick moustache are two of the more common facial hair styles. If you combine them you have the beardstache. For those who are considered growing a moustache but are unsure whether or not they can pull it off, the Beardstache provides a simple way to test out the look. Using your beard trimmer go over the cheeks, neck and jaw every few days maintaining stubble that sits somewhere between a five o’ clock shadow and a full beard. On the upper lip, make sure to keep it trimmed to just above the top lip.

MOISTURIZE

The skin underneath your moustache gets dry easily due to the hair drawing it’s moisture from the skin, allowing it to evaporate. To avoid stache dandruff, moisturize the skin under your moustache daily.

Now get out there and start growing your Mo. Stop by UWM and the UWM Barber shop stop if you need products, help styling or just the opinion of fellow moustache wearers.

Why You Should Use a Shoehorn | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

IMG_2101.jpg

Let's be honest, shoes can be expensive, because of this we want them to last as long as possible due to the investment. There are many things that can be done to extend the life of your shoes. Using a shoe horn is a simple yet effective way to take care of your finest shoes. At UWM Men’s Shop we are here to help you understand why you need to add this tool to your daily dressing routine!

If you are wearing nice shoes on a daily basis, then you should be using a shoe horn every day as well. Using a shoehorn daily is a simple way to keep your beautiful and expensive shoes in perfect condition for years of future wearing. What is unfortunate is that more times than not, men are putting their shoes on without one this wonderful tool. Start saving your shoes now by learning more about this tool and why you need to start using it!

Let’s be honest, you may not be inclined to use a shoe horn every time you put your shoes on. Days definitely can get busy, you might be rushed at times and slip your shoes on without taking a second to do it the right way. However, there are a few reasons why using this tool is a necessity. The reasons are as follows:

IMG_2095.jpg

You Like Your Shoes

If you don’t care too much about the shoes you’re wearing it’s one thing. However,if you love or even like the shoes that you’re wearing, then you’ll want to use this tool. A shoehorn will help preserve the shape of your shoe and the structure of the heel. This will help in keeping your shoes looking new much longer.

If They’re a little Small

If your shoes are a bit small on your feet  and you have a hard time getting them on, a shoehorn is the perfect solution. It will help you slide into your shoe with ease.

They’re a  Bit Stiff

Some polished leather shoes can be a bit stiff. Even after un-tying the laces, the shoe doesn’t seem to have a lot of flexibility. When this is the case, a shoe horn can help keep creases out of the heel and help keep the shoe’s overall structure intact.

How To Use a Shoe Horn

IMG_2103.jpg

Now that you know the reasons why you need to use a shoe horn, let's discuss how to use a shoehorn. There are several different options and styles of shoe horns available to choose from. Everything from smaller handheld options to shoe horns with longer handles that help in limiting the need to sit down or even bend over to put on your shoes. Once you find one you like, here’s a brief overview of what you need to know.

If you have a Shoehorn, Use It!

Start by loosening up your shoelaces, slide the shoe horn behind your heel to help it into the shoe without stepping on the heel. Do this every time you put on a pair of shoes to ensure you keep your shoes in good condition.

Don’t Use Force

You never want to force your foot and heel into a shoe. You also don’t want to force your foot and heel out of your shoe. Always use your hands to remove your shoe from your foot with ease.

Start Using a Shoe Horn Today

If you’re not already using a shoe horn, it’s time to start using one today! Doing so will help keep your shoes in great shape.

At UWM Men’s Shop we are all huge fans of shoe horns. Take it from us, once you try it for yourself we guarantee you will be sold too!!

Style Terms Guys Should Know | UWM Men's Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah

There is a well known saying, “knowledge is power.”

Let UWM Men’s Shop help you take your fashion knowledge to the next level. We've put together 23 key words and phrases to help upgrade your menswear knowledge.

1. Collar Gap

IMG_1441.jpg

An undesired space between the shirt collar and the suit collar, especially in the back, is often referred to as collar gap. Your suit collar should hug your shirt collar. A collar gap is often a sign of other fitting issues, so make sure you close the gap.

2. Break

How much of the bottom of a pair of trousers fold where they meet your shoes. A full break is a lot of gathering; no break is no gathering at all. Breaks are a matter of personal taste, but medium breaks are most common. While less of a break can yield a slimming look, if you're still getting a sense of your personal style, a medium break is a safe choice.

3. Brogue/Broguing

Ornamentation added to a leather shoe through patterns of small holes that are punched through the leather. People sometimes refer to them as “wingtips”.

IMG_2035.jpg

4. Yoke

The part of the garment around the neckline typically on the back from shoulder tip to shoulder tip.

5. Vent

The slit you see on the backside of sport coats and suit jackets.

6. French Cuffs

Twice as long as regular or “button” cuffs, french cuffs (or “double cuffs”) fold back and fasten with cufflinks or fabric knots. French cuffs lend an air of formality to an outfit, and are usually worn with suits or tuxedos.

7. Rise

Distance from the crotch to the top of the waistband in jeans and trousers.

8. Basted Stitch

Before the suit is tailored to be worn, sometimes the suit is temporarily stitched together with white basting thread. This allows you to try on the suit for the first time you try on your custom suit. A basted fitting allows the tailor to fine tune the suit.

9. Sprezzatura

Sprezzatura is the intentional effort of appearing effortless. The word dates back to the 1500s and remains a hallmark of Italian fashion today.

10. Gauntlet Button

A button placed halfway down the placket of the sleeve. This button maintains the sleeve's tailored appearance, but allows the shirt to be rolled above the elbow when unbuttoned.

11. Drop

The difference, in inches, between your jacket size and your waist size.

12. Canvassed Lining

IMG_2036.jpg

Traditionally, a suit is “canvassed” if the jacket is constructed with a layer of horsehair canvas underneath the wool fabric shell. This allows for a natural, form-fitting drape.

13. Jetted Pocket

Also called a “besom pocket”, the jetted pocket is a flap-less pocket set into the jacket or trouser. A flap pocket has a bit more material that can be tucked in to mimic a jetted pocket.

14. Gusset

A triangular or rhomboidal piece of fabric inserted at a seam to add strength and durability to a garment and reduce wear and tear. In men's formal wear, you'll often see a gusset in the underarm of a dress shirt. On casual shirts, this is the triangular piece present on the bottom side of the hem.

15. Cap Toe

A separate piece of material covering the toe section of a shoe for reinforcement and/or decoration; usually used on oxford-style shoes.

16. Donegal

Dating back to the 1800s, a knit or tweed with coarse, nubby multicolored yarns that are combined with single-colored yarns to produce a mottled effect.

17. Monk Strap

A casual or dress shoe with a single or double strap closure, usually with an adjustable buckle.

IMG_2037.jpg

18. Super Wools

The story of this thread is the numbering system used to describe the new breed of super-lightweight, high-twist wools. Pioneered by Italian mills, these fabrics are made using high-tech machines that spin wool lighter and finer than it's ever been spun before. The various grades of cloth are referred to as Super 100s, Super 120s, Super 150s and so on, up to Super 200s. Make Super 100s and Super 120s the mainstay of your wardrobe. They are durable, resilient, and today's fabrics are superb. Treat the Super 150s and Super 180s as caviar, wonderful, but not to be worn every day, for these really are connoisseurs' suits.

19. Swatches

IMG_2038.jpg

Fabric samples from manufacturers that give a glimpse of possible custom options.

20. Wool

A fiber obtained from the fleece of a sheep. It is a resilient and wrinkle resistant fabric. Wool can hold up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet.

21. Vicuna

A wild relative of the lama, inhabiting mountainous regions of South America and valued for its fine silky wool.

22. Merino Wool

A better-quality wool yarn made from the fleece of merino sheep. Merino sheep are said to have the finest and softest wool of any sheep.

23. Cashmere

An extremely soft and lightweight luxury fiber combed from the undercoat of the long-haired Kashmir goat. Cashmere has a soft and silky finish and is most commonly woven or knit to produce sweaters, suits, coats, and other clothing pieces.

HOW SHOULD A DRESS SHIRT FIT | UWM MEN'S SHOP | SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

krystian-krzewinski-eSO7_yNJ33E-unsplash.jpg

When it comes to dress shirts it is vital to have shirts that fit you correctly. The three most common fit issues are:

  1. Fit of the waist, too much/not enough fabric

  2. Sleeves too long/short for your arms

  3. Collars that are too loose/tight

  4. Slouching shoulder seam

These are the areas you need to pay attention to when you’re buying your next dress shirt.

Fit Of The Waist

Dress shirt shouldn’t have fabric hanging over the waist of your pants.  On the other end of the spectrum, you don’t want your shirt skin tight like a muscle tee. If your shirt is too small, wrinkles will start to form around the buttonholes. If the shirt is too loose, a muffin top will begin to form around your waist from the excess fabric.

How Long

Your dress shirt sleeves should end at the break of the hand, where your wrists meet your palms. If its too short your shirt sleeves will push too far back if you raise your arms. Too long and your sleeve cuff will begin to bunch and fold on your hands.

Neck Fit

A shirt collar that doesn’t fit is the worst. If it’s too small it may choke you out before you're done wearing it.  On the other side a massively oversized collar. You know the look, turn your head and you can see the shirt label on the back.

Your collar should fit close to your neck. There should be just enough room for you to run two fingers between your collar and your neck when its buttoned up. If you’re wearing a tie, think of the collar of your dress shirt like the waist of your pants. If you have pants that are too big and you put a belt on, the waist will begin to bunch-up. Same with your collar.

Shoulder Seam

Your shirt’s shoulder seam should hit you right on the top of your shoulders for a clean, tailored look. If you are going to something more oversized, this seam can be relaxed a bit and fall over the top of your shoulder. There are many different ways of wearing a dress shirt, but when it comes to a clean polished look, we recommend your shoulder seams hit right at the top of your shirt!

Sweaters | UWM Men's Shop | SLC, Utah

Sweaters help well dressed men navigate between the seasons adding texture and layers to outfits. They also will help you stay warm in chilly weather. Every man needs to have a few sweaters in their closet. Lets breakdown a few sweater styles.

Crew Neck

Named after the fisherman who originally wore this cut, a crew neck is a pullover sweater with a rounded, close-fitting neck. Today, they are one of the most popular sweater styles. It can be worn with a collared shirt underneath, but there is not enough room to wear a tie as well.

V-Neck

The v-neck is essentially the same as a crew neck, but the neckline is cut into a v-shape. Due to the cut, this sweater is best worn with a collared shirt and a tie or scarf.

Turtleneck

Also known as a roll neck, mock neck or polo neck sweater, some or all of the neck is covered by this sweater. A turtleneck is the highest, followed by the roll neck and then the shorter mock neck. They can be worn with a suit or on their own with a pair of chinos or blue jeans, they can even be worn on casual Friday to the office under a blazer.

Shawl collar

The modern shawl collar sweater is descended from military or “infantry” sweaters given to American GI’s. It has a rolled neck that is crossed or uncrossed in a v-neck shape; shawl collars can offer 1-3 buttons or toggles that can be either functional or just for looks.

Cardigan

A cardigan opens down the front like a shirt or jacket, and is closed by buttons or toggles. The most common version is single-breasted, but some styles offer double-breasted versions that look like a cross between a peacoat and a cardigan.

Half-zip

This modern style has a high collar that can be opened and closed with a short zipper, though it is typically worn open.

Sweaters come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and knits, including:

Solid: can be knit from a single color thread or a range of colors to add depth of color

Fair Isle: uses multiple colors and traditional Scottish patterns to create a bold result

Aran: is a knit that uses wider, thicker patterns to create a more three-dimensional texture in a solid color

Cable knit: is a classic pattern that imitates a 2-stranded rope, and usually, it comes in solid colors

The sweater materials used typically are determined by your budget also the intended purpose, and functionality. Aim to buy the best quality you can; one rule of thumb is to look at the level of detail provided by the manufacturer about the material. If it’s inexpensive, it will probably read “100% wool” or merely “cashmere”. If more detail is offered, such as the ply or the specific country of origin of the fiber, the more likely it is to be a higher quality.

Cashmere is a top material option for both its softness and warmth, which can be up to 8 times warmer than sheep’s wool. However, prices for cashmere sweaters can vary because not all cashmere is alike. Though all cashmere is derived from the fine under hair of the cashmere goat. The finest quality cashmere is made from the thinnest and longest fibers. Long and thin cashmere fibers make for the softest, most durable sweater that will last the longest.

Alpaca is generally considered to be as soft as cashmere, but microscopic air pockets in the fiber makes it about 7% more warmth than cashmere does. At the same time, Alpaca is elastic, lanolin free, hypo-allergenic and hence ideally suited to people who are allergic to wool or cashmere.

Merino sheep produce wool with fine fibers, making it ideal for thinner sweaters

Wool is famously itchy, but that shouldn’t prevent you from looking at this traditional fabric. Wear wool sweaters over button-down shirts. Merino wool, for example, is perfect for layering over shirts, and underneath jackets.

Cotton and linen are especially popular in warmer climates or for transitional seasons. They don’t provide much protection from the cold, but it is a step up to just wearing a shirt.
